Family Portrait

My mother, who is seventy years old, recently sent me a photograph of herself that I had never seen before. While cleaning out the attic of her Florida home, she came across a studio portrait she had taken about a year before she married my father. This picture of my mother is about a twenty-year-old girl and the story behind it has fascinated me from the moment I began to consider it.

The young in the picture has a face that resembles my own in many ways. Her face is a bit more oval than mine, but the softly waving brown hair around it is identical. The small, straight nose is the same model I was born with. My mother’s mouth is closed, yet there is just the slightest hint of a smile on her full lips. I know that if she had smiled, she would have shown the same wide grin and down-curving “smile lines” that appear in my own snapshots. The most haunting feature in the photo, however, is my mother’s eyes. They are an exact duplicate of my own large, dark-brown ones. Her brows are plucked into thin lines, which are like two pencil strokes added to highlight those fine, luminous eyes. I’ve also carefully studied the clothing and jewelry in the photograph. Although the photo was taken fifty years ago, my mother is wearing a blouse and skirt that could easily be worn today. The blouse is made of heavy eggshell-colored satin and reflects the light in its folds and hollows. It has a turned-down cowl collar and smocking on the shoulders and bellow the collar. The smocking (tiny rows of gathered material) looks hand-done. The skirt, which covers my mother’s calves, is straight and made of light wool or flannel. My mother is wearing silver drop earrings. They are about two inches long and roughly shield-shaped. On her left wrist is a matching bracelet. My mother can’t find this bracelet now, despite the fact that we spent hours searching through the attic for it. On the third finger of her left hand is a ring with a large, square-cut stone.

The story behind the picture is as interesting to me as the young woman it captures. Mom, who was earning twenty-five dollars a week as a file clerk, decided to give her boyfriend (my father) a picture of herself. She spent almost two weeks’ salary on the skirt and blouse, which she bought at a fancy department store downtown. She borrowed the earrings and bracelet from her older sister, my aunt Dorothy. The ring she wore was a present from another young man she was dating at the time. Mom spent another chunk of her salary to pay the portrait photographer for the hand-tinted print in old-fashioned tones of brown and tan. Just before giving the picture to my father, she scrawled at the lower left, “Sincerely, Beatrice.”

When I studied this picture, I react in many ways. I think about the trouble that Mom went into in order to impress the young man who was to be my father. I laugh when I look at the ring, which was probably worn to make my father jealous. I smile at the serious, formal inscription my mother used at this stage of the budding relationship. Sometimes I am filled with a mixture of pleasure and sadness when I look at this frozen long-ago moment. It is a moment of beauty, of love, and—in a way—of my own past.

It is difficult to learn Chinese. Firstly, it involves a completely new character system—traditional Chinese and simplified Chinese. Secondly, Chinese is a tonal language, it will express totally different meaning while changing the tones. Because of these reasons, there is only few students applying to take my course in St Max College and most of them are Chinese Americans. But Alice is an exception. Leaning Chinese is her hobby. She participated in my class actively and spent lots of time practicing in our language laboratory. She made connection with a classmate who is from Taiwan and travelled to Taiwan in the summer vacation when she was in first and second grade. As a result, Alice made a big progress. At first, she just knew some basic knowledge, and now she can make conversation fluently and read Chinese newspaper. It was impressive that she would explore those culture background which are involed in articles of newspaper. Besides travelling to Taiwan, she made several research and handed in articles about social, economic, argriculture, political and sexual problems, especially one article about homeless people in Taiwan which I encouraged her to submit to local newspaper called St Max communique as an critical eaasy. It is enjoyable for me to see her behaving actively and happily in my class. And it is also helpful to make my class atmosphere be active.

In a room at Texas Children Cancer Center in Houston, eight-year-old Simran Jatar lay in bed with a drip (点滴) above her to fight her bone cancer. Over her bald head, she wore a pink hat that matched her clothes. But the third grader's cheery dressing didn't mask her pain and weary eyes.

Then a visitor showed up. “Do you want to write a song?” asked Anita Kruse, 49, rolling a cart equipped with an electronic keyboard, a microphone and speakers. Simran stared. “Have you ever written a poem?” Anita Kruse continued. “Well, yes,” Simran said.

Within minutes, Simran was reading her poem into the microphone “Some bird soaring through the sky,” she said softly. “Imagination in its head…” Anita Kruse added piano music, a few warbling (鸣,唱) birds, and finally the girl's voice. Thirty minutes later, she presented Simran with a CD of her first recorded song.

That was the beginning of Anita Kruse's project, Purple Songs Can Fly, one that has helped more than 125 young patients write and record songs. As a composer and pianist who had performed at the hospital, Kruse said that the idea of how she could help “came in one flash”.

The effect on the kids has been great. One teenage girl, curling (蜷缩) in pain in her wheelchair, stood unaided to dance to a hip-hop song she had written. A 12-year-old boy with Hodgkin's disease who rarely spoke surprised his doctors with a song he called I Can Make It.

“My time with the kids is heartbreaking because of the severity of their illnesses,” says Anita Kruse. “But they also make you happy, when the children are smiling, excited to share their CD with their families.”

Simran is now an active sixth grader and cancer-free. From time to time, she and her mother listen to her song, Always Remembering, and they always remember the “really sweet and nice and loving” lady who gave them a shining moment in the dark hour.

My wife and I have always been friendly with the clerks at the local convenience store. I don't think many people appreciate what a difficult job these folks have. They work for a little over minimum wage and I often wonder how they make ends meet.

One of the clerks, Charlie, was always wearing his glasses but he didn't one day. I asked him about it and he said they'd been out of order and that he couldn't afford a new pair. His family needed money. It was obvious that he was having a difficult time.

We wanted to help him, so we turned to our own eye doctor for assistance with a plan. We had his secretary contact him, asking him to come in for an eye exam for free. We told the doctor to let him order whatever glasses he wanted and that we would pay for them. Although Charlie questioned what was going on, the doctor just told him that someone had offered the money for his new glasses. When we went in to pay the bill, the doctor told us he was so touched by our idea that he waived the exam fee and only charged us for half the price of the glasses!

It was so wonderful to see Charlie in his new glasses and he enjoyed telling all the regular customers how the gift came about. I'm sure that upon hearing his story, ideas of kindness may have emerged in the minds of many.

A.Charlie was a young man with skills

B.Charlie knew who paid the money for the new glasses

C.Charlie didn't support his family with enough money

D.Charlie entirely accepted the money for the new glasses

It was obvious that he was having a difficult time”推断是Charlie没有足够的钱养活家人。故选C。

7.The underlined word “waived” in the third paragraph can be replaced by ________.

A.gave up

Thank you, Plena. Thank you, Jun. Thank you,Peishan for helping this set up.

Thank you all for being here today and the late comers as well. Thank you for coming in quietly.

I wanna start off today just to take a moment of silence for the victims of the Sichuanearthquake and also for the victims of the Boston marathon bombing. So lets just take aminute to pay our respect to that.

Thank you.

I never thought I would be addressing you, the esteemed members of the Oxford Union, without a guitar or an Erhu, without my crazy stage hair, costumes. But I did perform in theO2 Arena in London last week. I am not sure if any of you were able to make that. But in manyways, that was similar to what Im talking about today, that is, introducing Chinese pop musichere.

See, I am actually an ambassador of Chinese pop, whether I like it or not, both music andmovies. And today Im here to give you the state of union address. Its not the Oxford Union. Its the union of east and west. I wanna frankly, openly and honestly talk about how weve donea good job or how weve done a bad job of bringing Chinese pop to the west. And I also want topress upon all of you here today the importance of that soft culture, that soft power exchangeand how each of us is involved in that exchange.

Soft power, a term I am sure you are all familiar with this point

Coined by Rhodes Scholar and Oxford alumnus Joseph Nye is defined as the ability to attractand persuade.

Shashi Tharoor called it, in a recent TED Talk, the ability for a culture to tell a compellingstory and influence others to fall in love with it.

I like that definition.

But I want to put it in collegiate term for all you students in the audience: The way I see it,east and west are kinda like freshman roommates.

You dont know a lot about each other but suddenly you are living together in the same room. And each one is scared that the others gonna steal his shower time or wants a party when theother wants to study.

It has the potential to be absolute hell, doesnt it? We all had horrible stories of THATroommate. Weve all heard about those stories. I know a lot of students here in Oxford haveyour own separate bedrooms. But when I was a freshman at Williams College, I was not so safeand fortunate.

(You are kidding me. Woo-hoo! All right, all right!Great. )

Well, I had a roommate, and he was THAT roommate. Lets just call him Frank. So Frank wasmy roommate and Frank liked nothing more than to smoke weed. And he did it every day.

And Frank had a two-foot long bong under his bed that was constantly being fired up. Forthose Chiese speakers in the audience. Frank would “火力全开” on that bong every day.

All right

So, I guess I was kinda of the opposite of Bill Clinton who “tried marijuana but didnt inhale”. Ididnt try marijuana but I did inhale, every single day, second hand. And strangely enoughevery time I dwelt into our bedroom, I mysteriously end up being late for class. I dont knowhow it happened. It was like “Dude, it is already ten oclock?”.

So, how many of you have lived with the Frank, or could be a Frank Gat? Having a roommatecan be a recipe for disaster, but it also has the potential for being the greatest friendshipyouve ever had. See, Frank, he didnt make it the second year. And I got two new roommatessecond year, Stephen and Jason. And in this day, the three of us are the best friends.

So going back to my analogy, of east and west as roommates. Do we want to be Frank, or do wewant to be Stephen and Jason? And I think, in this day and age of 2013, we should all bestriving for the latter, should we…I mean Im assuming that we all agree that this is the goalwe should all be striving for.

Lets look at where we are in reality. Recent headlines in the media include, Foreign PolicyMagazine: Chinas victim complex. Why are Chinese leaders so paranoid about the UnitedStates? Or the AFP, the Agence France-Presse, hu

man rights in China worsening US finds.Bloomberg says, on the cover of its magazine, “yes, the Chinese Army is spying on you.”

And its such a great one that I just want to show you the cover of the magazine. Yes. Be veryafraid! Ok, is it shown to you right? OK. So theres actually an extremely high amount ofnegativity and fear and anxiety about China, sinophobia, that I think is not just misinformed, but also misleading and ultimately dangerous, very dangerous.

And what about how westerners are viewed by Chinese? Well, we have terms for westerners. The most common of which are gweilo in Cantonese, which means “the old devil”, lao wai, meaning the old outsider in mandarin, ang moh, which means the “red hairy one” in Taiwanese. The list goes on and on. So are these roommates headed for a best friend relationship? I thinkwe need a little help. And as China rises to be global power, I think it is more important thanever for us to be discerning about what we believe, because after all, I think thats the purposeof higher education.

And thats why we are all here: to be able to think for ourselves and make our own decisions.Chinas not just those headlines, the burgeoning economy of the unique politics. Its not justthe worlds factory or the next big superpower, its so much more. A billion people with richculture, amazing stories and as a product of both of those cultures, I want to help fosterunderstanding between the two, and help create that incredible relationship.

Because knowing both sides of the coin, I really think that there is a love story waiting to betold, waiting to unfold. And I am only half-joking when I said love story because I believe it is,the stories that will save us, will bring us together. And my thesis statement for todays talk isthat, the relationship between the east and west needs to be and can be fixed via pop culture.Thats a big fat plan. And I am gotta trying to back it up!

The UN Secretary general Bunki Boo said:

“There are no language required in musical world.”That is the power of music. That is the power of the heart. Through this promotion of arts, wecan better understand that the culture and civilizations of other people. In this era ofinstability and intolerance, we need to promote better understanding through the power ofmusic.

Now the UN Secretary General thinks we need more music, and I think he is right. Music andarts have always played the key role in my life in building relationships, replacing what once wasthe ignorance, fear and hatred with acceptance, friendships and even love. So I have astrong case for promoting music between cultures because it happened to me early in life.

I was born and raised in Rochester, New York. I barely spoke a word of Chinese. I didnt knowthe difference between Taiwan or Thailand. I was… Thats true. I was as American as apple pie.Until one day, on a third grade playground, the inevitable finally happened. I got teased forbeing Chinese.
