Take myself as an example, I changed my major when I became a postgraduate. After the choice,days have been harsh for me.I cannot understand the new lessons at all. For they are closely related to mathmatics which I learned nothing about before. However wuth the belief that this is the great chance for me to experience new ideas and challenge myself,I persisted. Smoking is a greater cause of death and disability than any single disease, says the World Health Organisation.

According to their figures, it is responsible for approximately five million deaths worldwide every year.

Tobacco smoking is a known or probable cause of approximately 25 diseases, and even the WHO says that its impact on world health is not fully assessed.

Heart attack and stroke

UK studies show that smokers in their 30s and 40s are five times more likely to have a heart attack than non-smokers.

Tobacco contributes to the hardening of the arteries, which can then become blocked and starve the heart of bloodflow, causing the attack.

Often, smokers who develop this will require complex and risky heart bypass surgery.

If you smoke for a lifetime, there is a 50% chance that your eventual death will be smoking-related – half of all these deaths will be in middle age.

Smoking also increases the risk of having a stroke.

Lung problems

Another primary health risk associated with smoking are lung cancer, which kills more than 20,000 people in the UK every year.

US studies have shown that men who smoke increase their chances of dying from the disease by more than 22 times.

Women who smoke increase this risk by nearly 12 times.

Lung cancer is a difficult cancer to treat – long term survival rates are poor.

Smoking also increases the risk of oral, uterine, liver, kidney, bladder, stomach, and cervical cancers, and leukaemia.

Another health problem associated with tobacco is emphysema, which, when combined with chronic bronchitis, produces chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

The lung damage which causes emphysema is irreversible, and makes it extremely difficult to breathe.

Harm to children

Smoking in pregnancy greatly increases the risk of miscarriage, is associated with lower birthweight babies, and inhibited child development.

Smoking by parents following the birth is linked to sudden infant death syndrome, or cot death, and higher rates of infant respiratory illness, such as bronchitis, colds, and pneumonia.

一、名词性从句：在句中起名词作用的从句叫名词性从句。

二、分类：主语从句，宾语从句，表语从句，同位语从句。

1、 whether与if 引导的名词性从句的区别。

表“是否”之意时，用whether不用if的情况：（1）正式文体中，句中有or not时。 I don’t know whether or not he can stay here longer.

（2）在引导主语从句，表语从句，同位语从句时。

The question is whether you can do it yourself.

Whether it will do us harm or good remains to be seen.

The question whether he will come here isn’t decided yet.

（3）在介词后时。It depends on whether we can get enough money.

（4）在不定式前。She hasn’t decided whether to go or not.

（5）作discuss等词的宾语。We discussed whether we should close the shop.

Δ如果宾语从句是否定结构，则用if而不用whether引导。

He asked me if I wasn’t going there.

Δ用it作形式主语时，whether或if都可引导主语从句。

It is not clear to me whether/if he likes the present.

2、当主句谓语动词表示不肯定或怀疑时，宾语从句用whether/if引导；表示有把握时，用that引导。

3、（1）that引导的名词性从句作介词的宾语，只用在except,but,in后，其他一些介词的宾语从句如果由连词that引导则用it先行一步作形式宾语。

He is a good student except that he is careless.

You may reply on it that I shall help you.

（2）that引导宾语从句时，that可省去。

Mike said (that) he wasn’t feeling well.

注意下面句中的that,一般不可省去。 (3)that在引导主语从句，表语从句，同位语从句时，一般不省略。

1、it作形式主语或形式宾语，把真正的主语从句或宾语从句放在句子后面。

注意下面的句型：

(1) It’s said/thought/believed/reported/hoped that

It is believed that the earth was flat.

(2) It happened/occurred/chanced/appeared/seemed that

It happened that he was there.

(3) 句中It 指某种情况

I hate it when people talk with their mouths full.

2、 名词性从句的语序。

名词性从句的语序为陈述语序，即：连词（+被修饰语）+主语+谓语。

Who he is doesn’t matter much.

You can’t imagine how excited I was at that moment.

3、 名词性从句与主句时态呼应

主语从句、表语从句、同位语从句的时态不受主句的限制，但宾语从句的时态一般要受主句的限制。主语是现在时态时，从句时态根据情况而定；主句是过去时态时，从句须用与过去有关的时态，除非宾语从句叙述的是真理、客观事实或谚语。如：

I don’t know where he is now/where he was yesterday .

He told us that he had been married for ten years.

The teacher told us that light travels faster than sound.

The teacher told us that failure is the mother of success.

4、 宾语从句的否定前移。

常用结构有I don’t think/believe/expect/imagine/suppose that

I don’t think he will come.

五、虚拟语气在名词性从句中的应用。

1、 一些动词后跟宾语从句时，从句用虚拟语气，即(should)do形式。这类动词是：一

坚持insist,二命令order/command,三建议suggust/propose/advise,四要求demand/require/request/ask.

He demanded that we (should) be on time .

They have recommended that the site (should) be closed.

2、 在it is suggested/requested/orded/proposed/important/necessary等结构的主语从句中。 It is suggested that we (should) finish our work.

It is important that we (should) study English hard.

3、 在suggestion/order/plan/idea/recommendation/request 等名词后的表语从句或同位语

从句中。

My idea is that we (should) have a picnic in the coming weekend.

六、that 引导的同位语从句与定语从句的区别。

that 引导的同位语从句起连接从句的作用，无意义，不作句子成分，不能省去。that在定语从句中不仅起连接作用，还当句子成分，如果在定语从句中作宾语可省去。

The news that we won the game is true.

The news that he told us is true.
