The vast Hebei Plain stretched out in front of us with our beloved city, Beijing, hidden in the thick of the misty trees. It was wondrous, in a way, to see Kunming Lake in the Summer Palace, which had always been considered a great lake, appear more like a basin of clear water, and Wanshoushan (Longivy hill) and Foxiangge (Temple of Incense to the Buddha) mere little artifices for flower pots. We had forgotten about the leaves although the slope higher up was completely covered with them, yellowing and turning red. Too bad that the rain had spoilt the color, preventing them from turning a true red. How beautiful they might otherwise have been in the sunshine!

The trunk is usually about ten feet high, as if man-made, with no lateral boughs for ten feet, and all its forked branches thrust upwards close together, as if man-made too, forming a cluster with none straying sideways or at an angle. All the broad leaves too rise upwards with hardly one slanting let alone drooping down. The bark is a glosssy silver halo tinged with light green. This tree remains stunbornly erect even when crushed by the wind and snow of the north. It may measure no more around than a bowl, yet it strains upward to attain a height of ten or twenty feet, reaching unswervingly for the sky and defying the northwest wind.

A zigzag cinder-path extends along the lotus pool. It's quiet and secluded, hardly beaten by day and even more lonesome at night. Around the pool are trees growing thick and bushy; by the path are willows and some unknown trees. On the moonless nights the track is gloomy and dismal, whereas it's quite clear tonight, though the moonlight is pale.

We children and the little maidservants were all delighted. Some of us bought seeds, some dug up the plot and others watered it. In just a few months we had a harvest.

8. An old crab grew restless. Finding himself stiff all over, he knew it was time for him to
moult his shell. He dashed here and there in search of a cave to hide. He was going
to block up the mouth of the cave so that he could moult in secret. He knew it would be very dangerous to shed his shell in the open because, with his new shell still being soft, he might be eaten up by other crabs. This fear was not groundless for he himself had really seen it happen to other moulting crabs.

飘逸人生
行路难,但人生之路谁都要走。有的人在赶路,心急切切,步急匆匆。眼中只有目标却忽略了风景,可路迢迢不知哪儿是终点。有的人如游客,不急不慌,走走停停,看花开花落,看云卷云舒,有时也在风中走,雨中行,心却像张开的网,放过焦虑苦恼。
人生之路谁不走?只是走路别忽略了一路的良辰美景。
一个人工作的地方是小的,居住的家是小的,社交的圈子是小的,有的人就越来越不满这缺乏变化的单调。有的人却总是怡然自得,随遇而安。世界浩渺,一个人只能居于一角。比海洋大的是天空,比天空大的是心灵,因为这小小的心灵内居住着一只时起时落的想象鸟。
大碗饮茶解渴,却说不上这茶是怎样的好。
一心想的到的东西终于得到了,失去了却很多很多,而失去的原来比得到的还要好。
物化了的生命硬如岩石,而那些看似无价值的却永葆这神韵和空灵。
人生旅途上,有人背负着名利急急奔走,有人回归自然,飘逸而行。
Life: Take It Easy
To go on a journey is often full of hardships, but so long as one lives
he proceeds on his life's journey. Different people go along differently.
Some take hasty steps in anxiety. Obsessed with reaching the next goal in
time, they spare no time for sightseeing along the way, nor do they have a
clear view of where their long roads end. Others travel leisurely like
tourists. They would take time off now and then for a look at blooming
flowers or fallen petals. They would stop to admire clouds gathering and
dispersing. Even when they go against the wind or are caught in the rain,
they never get annoyed, for worries slip off their minds as from an open net. Everyone goes his way in life. What makes a difference is: does he have a
pleasant trip enjoying the landscape along the way?
Cramped is one's workplace, narrow is one's residence and small is the
social circle one moves about—such limitiedness in space entails lack of
variety which is the source of some people's complaint. But others are always contended and happy for he can adapt himself to different circumstances.
Compared with the vastness of the universe it is only a tiny spot one
occupies on earth. However, though larger than the ocean is the sky, even
larger is the human mind, for in it imagination can come and go on the wing
without limitation.
To drink at a gulp is a quick way to quench thirst, but it gives no taste
of the high grade tea. One may eventually win what he has set his mind to,
only to find that he has lost quite a lot. Perhaps what he loses is ever
better than what he gains.
Life, when petrified by material desires, is as callous as stone, while
those seemingly worthless things always remain fresh and full of spirit.
In their journey through life, some people hurry on with a heavy heart in
pursuit of fame and gain, while others go with an easy, grace, enjoying
themselves in harmony with nature.

冢中琵琶 林清玄
最近读到魏晋时代艺术家阮咸的传记,阮咸是魏晋南北朝最重要的七位诗人作家之一,这七人在当时号称为“竹林七贤”,但是他没有其他六贤有名,因为他的文学创作一点也没有保留下来,我们几乎无法从文字上去追探他在诗歌创作上的成就。
阮咸死的时候,以一件琵琶乐器殉葬,这使他成为中国音乐史上少数可以追思的伟大音乐家之一。伴随阮咸长眠于地下的琵琶,经过从西晋到唐朝的五百年埋藏,到了唐玄宗开元年间,有人在古墓里挖掘到一件铜制的正圆形乐器,经过弘文馆学士元行冲的考证,才证明它是阮咸的遗物。
这一件冢中琵琶因为五百年的沉埋,已经不堪使用,元行冲叫技巧高明的乐匠依其样式仿制了一具木制乐器,称为“月琴”,音调雄亮清雅,留传至今,不但成为宫廷中的乐器,也成为后来民间最常使用的乐器。
到了唐德宗时代,著名学者杜估鉴于“月琴”原是阮咸所创制,为了怀念他的遗风逸响,将月琴定名为“阮咸”,自此以后,凡是中国琵琶乐器全得了“阮咸”的别名,阮咸于是得以与中国音乐史同垂不朽。 阮咸与琵琶的故事是宜于联想的,经过时空一再的洗炼,我们虽无幸重聆阮咸的丝竹之音,但我们可以感受到一颗伟大的艺术心灵的不朽。艺术心灵的伟大纵使在地下数百年,纵使他手中的乐器弦败质朽,却仍然能在时空中放光,精灿夺目。阮咸死时以琵琶殉葬,做为惟一的知已,这种艺术之情使他恒常令人怀念。 千古以来,被认为是中国音乐最高境界的名曲《广陵散》便是阮咸的创作,
随着阮咸的逝世,《广陵散》成为中国音乐上的绝响,我们如今眼望广大的土地,倾听历史的足音,在夏夜星空的月下,仿佛看见阮咸在竹林下弹月琴自娱,或者与嵇康的古琴(嵇康是古琴的高手,古琴状似古筝)相应和,在琴声响过,筝声戛然而止的时候,他们纵酒狂歌,大谈圣人的明教与老庄的自然,然后长叹一声“礼岂为我辈设耶!”
那是一种什么样的境界呢?
阮咸的音乐天分几乎是与生俱来的,他很年轻的时候就被称为音乐的“神解”,任何音乐到他的耳中马上分辨出高低清浊,丝毫不爽;因此他不但弹奏月琴时能使人如饮醇酒,沉醉不已,他还是个音乐的批评家,对音乐的鉴赏力当世无有其匹。没想到他的音乐批评,竟得罪了主掌全国音乐行政的大官苟勋,他向晋武帝进谗言,革去了阮咸的官职。
阮咸丢官的时候,官位是“散骑侍郎”,这个职衔我们不用考证来解释,而用美感来联想,就仿佛看见一位卓然不群的流浪琴师,骑着驴子到处弹琴高歌的样子。
事实上,阮咸对当世的礼法非常轻蔑。他曾在母丧期间,身穿孝服,骑着驴子去追求自己私恋已久的胡婢,引得众人大哗,这在当时是不可思议的事,如今想起来却特别具有一种凄美的气氛。
我一直认为像阮咸这样的人,他是可以做到忘情的境界,但是他不能忘情音乐,以琵琶殉葬却是不可解的谜,难道这位“神解”能料到千年之后,人们能从冢中的琵琶怀想起千年之前,曾在他手中传扬的《广陵散》吗?阮咸给我们的启
示还不只此,他和当时的艺术家给我们一个视野广大的胸怀,也就是“以大地为栋宇,屋室为禅衣”的胸怀,因为这种胸怀,他们方能体会到生活的乐趣,发出艺术的光辉。
我最喜欢“竹林七贤”的一则故事是:有一天嵇康、阮籍、阮咸、山涛、刘伶在竹林里喝酒,王戎最后才到。阮籍说:“这个俗气的东西,又来败坏我们的乐趣!”王戎回答说:“你们的乐趣,岂是可以败坏的吗?”这则故事正道出了“竹林七贤”艺术生命的真正所在,你看阮咸留在坟墓中的琵琶,它虽朽了,却永远不会败坏;因为那一把琵琶,曾经属于一个伟大的艺术心灵,注定了它在人心里永不败坏的玄想——如此说来,琵琶恐怕也是有心的吧! (节选自《林清玄散文集》,有删改)

①一个有钱的富人,正在自家的花园里赏梅花。
②那是冬日寒冷的清晨,艳红的梅花正以最美丽的姿容吐露,富人颇为自己的花园里能开出这样美丽的梅花,而感到无比的快慰。
③突然,门外传来敲门的声音,富人去开了门,发现一个衣衫褴褛的乞丐,在寒风里冻得直打抖,那乞丐已在这开满梅花的园外冻了一夜,他说:“先生,行行好,可不可以给我一点东西吃?”
④富人请乞丐在园门口稍稍等候,转身进入厨房,端来一碗热腾腾的饭菜,他布施给乞丐的时候,乞丐忽然说:“先生,您家里的梅花,真是非常芳香呀!”说完了,转身走出去。
⑤富人呆立在那里,感到非常震惊,他震惊的是:穷人也会赏梅花吗?这是自己从来不知道的。另一个震惊的是,花园里种了几十年的梅花,为什么自己从来没有闻到过梅花的芳香呢?
⑥于是,他小心翼翼地,以一种庄严的心情,深怕惊动梅香似的悄悄走近梅花,他终于闻到了梅花那含蓄的、清澈的、澄明无比的芬芳,然后他濡湿的眼睛,流下了感动的泪水,为自己第一次闻到梅花的芳香。

⑨一个人的品质其实是与梅香相似,是无形的,是一种气息,我们如果光是欣赏花的外形,就很难知道梅花有极淡的清香;我们如果不能细心地体会,也难以品味到一个人隐在外表内部的人格香气。
⑩最可叹息的是,很少有人能回观自我,品赏自己心灵的梅香,大部分人空过了一生,也没有体会到隐藏在心灵内部极幽微,但极清澈的自性的芳香。 ⒒能闻到梅香的乞丐也是富有的人。
