Pollution is caused either by man’s release of completely new and often artificial substances into the environment, or by releasing greatly increased amounts of a natural substance, such as oil from oil tankers into the sea.
The whole industrial process which makes many of the goods and machines we need and use in our daily lives, is bound to create a number of waste products which upset the environmental balance, or the ecological balance as it is also known. Many of these waste products can be prevented or disposed of sensibly, but clearly while more and more new and complex goods are produced there will be new, dangerous wastes to be disposed of, for example, the waste products from nuclear power stations. Many people, therefore, see pollution as only part of a larger and more complex problem, that is, the whole process of industrial production and consumption of goods.
Others again see the problem mainly in connection with agriculture, where new methods are helping farmers grow more and more on their land to feed our ever-increasing populations. However, the land itself if gradually becoming worn out as it is being used, in some cases, too heavily, and artificial fertilizers cannot restore the balance.
Whatever its underlying reasons, there is no doubt that much of the pollution caused could be controlled if only companies, individuals and governments would make more efforts. In the home there is an obvious need to control litter and waste. Food comes wrapped up three or four times in packages that all have to be disposed of; drinks are increasingly sold in bottles or tins which cannot be reused. This not only causes a litter problem, but also is a great waste of resources, in terms of glass, metals and paper. Advertising has helped this process by persuading many of us not only to buy things we neither want nor need, but also to throw away much of what we do buy.
Pollution and waste combine to be a problem everyone can help to solve by
cutting out unnecessary buying, excess consumption and careless disposal of the products we use in our daily lives.

Arctic Hero –The Story of Matthew Henson
Matthew was an explorer who helped to discover the North Pole. When he was about 12 years old, he ran away to sea. He joined a ship
as a cabin boy, peeling potatoes and cleaning the decks. At the age of 18, he had already traveled the world. Soon he met an explorer called Robert Peary and he became Robert’s servant . While they were in the jungle, one of Robert’s survey team fell into some quicksand. Then man was so frightened, he left the expedition. Matthew took over the man’s job. He and Robert then spent the next 18 years exploring the Arctic. They went to learn the skills they needed to survive in Greenland. But on their first attempt Robert’s feet became badly frostbitten. He had to take off eight of Robert’s toes. But still Robert and Matthew would not give up. Four times they tried to reach the Pole. In 1908 Robert and Matthew made their last trip to the Arctic. When they were just a few miles from the Pole, Matthew suddenly fell through the ice. Luckily a men was close by and pulled him out before he drowned. Then they reached the North Pole in the end. When they came back, a man called Frederick Cook had claimed to have reached the North Pole before them. But, in the end, Cook’s claim was showed to be a hoax. So Robert was rewarded with the fame and medals he deserved. Because Matthew was a black man, he was not rewarded for his part in the expedition. Matthew finally receives the
greatest medal – the Hubbard medal in 2000 when he was 81 yeas old. In 1998 a film called Glory and Honor was made, claiming to be the true story of the research for the North Pole. Then, in 2001, a radio programmer called Stealing the Glory was produced. He would now be remembered by people all over the world!

时 间如流水般淌过，转眼间期中段考也已结束，成绩也已经公布了。望着试卷上的分数，我惊讶了。因为这并不是我真正想要的分数。为什么我不能考得再高一些呢！于是，我开始自我检查。
我每到考试的时候总因紧张而很着急，为此，我想出了几个办法。1.解答题时，不要急于下笔，要先在草稿纸上列出这道题的主要步骤，然后按照步骤一步步做下来，不忽略每一个细节，尽量把每一道题都答得完整；2.平时多做一些不同类型的题，这样就会对大多数题型熟悉，拿到试卷心中就有把握；3.适当做一些练习。我想如果我能做到我以上提到的这几点，我一定能把考试中的失误降到最低。因此，我一定会尽力做到以上几点的。
但我想单单只靠以上几点还是不够的，我还就该拥有几点科学应试技巧。于是，我根据我自己的实际情况想出了几点。第一点：拿到考卷后，应把考卷整体审视一遍，看一看哪些题目比较容易，哪些题目比较难。第二点：先从简单的题做起，把那些好拿的分数全部拿过来。第三点：遇到难题，实在不能马上写出来的话，不要死死地盯着那道题，而忽略了别的题，应把所有会做的题做完才努力解答那道题。第四点：考完后，认真地检查，看看自己有没有把题目看错或抄错。 在下一次考试中,我一定会尽自己最大的努力做到最好
在刚刚结束的期中考试里，我犯了很多不该犯的错误。
我一向语文很好，可是这次鬼使神差的，语文竟然错了很多不该错的地方。经过我的仔细反思，我想这和我阅读题目不认真有着很大的关系。这点也同样延伸到了数学和英语方面。很多计算和语法上的小错误让我丢掉了不少分数。（你改改即可）
我知道老师对于我有着很大的期望，可是我还是没有考好。对于这点我感到十分抱歉。但是既然犯了错误就要改正，所以，通过考试我也想了很多以后一定要学习的东西。
首先我要改掉考试不细心读题目的坏习惯。有时候我往往看着题目前面就顺手把后面的问题写上了，但是却错了很多。这也许也和答题技巧有关系。总之，通过以后的练习，我一定要在考试的过程之中认真审题，自习读题，把题目看准、看好。时间允许的时候要多检查几遍，绝对不允许自己再犯类似于这样的无谓的错误。
其次，我还要加强语文、数学、英语三门主科以及政治、历史、地理、生物和物理的习题强化。通过考试，我终于明白山外有山，人外有人。平日大家都聚在一起做一样的题目，感觉不出来有什么明显的差异。可是一当考试，才发现原来那么多考试题目是我从来看都没看过的（你就先编着吧）。只怪自己买的练习题
做的少。不能允许自己再继续这样下去，所以，我一定要加倍努力，从这次考试之中汲取教训，增加力量，为下一次考试做好准备，打好基础。
考试技巧贵在练习。生活之中，我还要多多加强自己的练习和复习，考试之前制定周详的复习计划，不再手忙脚乱，没有方向。平日生活学习中学会积累，语文积累好词好句，数学也要多积累难的题目，英语则是语法项目。对做完形填空等练习题也是提高英语的好方法。
期中考试毕竟不是期末考试，我还是有机会的。下一次考试，我要更努力，争取不让老师、家长和同学们失望。不让自己失望。
对于各科老师，我希望老师不要对我失去信心，虽然我这次考得并不理想，但是我相信自己的实力。下一次考试，我一定会努力的！
