I believe that Columbia has the ideal culture in which I can pursue(追求) my goal of becoming an innovative and responsible arts administrator and contributing to the Columbia company’s outstanding record as a center fro exhibition and discussion of contemporary art and culture.

I also have studied broader elements of arts management, including audience development and fund-raising as a part of my recent arts management class at the State University. As part of that class, I worked for the BCE Museum examining their marketing strategies, as well as other institutions, in an effort to discover the most effective and efficient manner to promote their upcoming exhibition. This rewarding experience working for the BCE Museum sharpened my desire to continue in this field and helped me develop the tools I need to be an effective arts administrator. I have also been able to spend time working for the BCE Museum specifically as a survey assistant, which has further strengthened my interest in museum studies.
I firmly believe that I will be a good fit in Columbia’s innovative environment. Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
Tom

This could be Micah Fitz’s first spring without football practices. The 14-year-old has been playing since she was 3, but because he’s home-schooled, he can’t try out for the local team at Patriot High School in Prince William Country, Virginia.
“I can’t play this half of the year and my friends are going to be playing the five or six times a week,” he said. “They’re going to be getting better and stronger playing with kids that are good.”
Micah and his family—along with many other home-schooling families across Virginia—are hoping the Virginia General Assembly will approve a bill this year that would allow kids like him to try out for sports on public school athletic team. The bill, called the “Tebow bill”, is named after football player Tim Tedbow, who was home-schooled but was allowed to play on a high school team before going to the university of Florida, where he led his team to two national championships.
Many major statewide education organizations said the bill wouldn’t be fair to public school student. Ken Tilley, the executive director of the Virginia High School League, said the bill would violate two of the league’s most long-standing standards for qualification: enrollment and academic standing.
Home-school advocates argued they are required by the law to document academic progress. But many opponents said students always have the option of attending public high school. That might be what Sydney Bowman, a 12-year-old from Lucketts, will do to keep wrestling, although she would prefer to continue to be taught at home. In her case, girls’ wrestling teams are rare enough that there aren’t many options other than public school.
But Micah’s mom, Terri Fitz, a former public school teacher, said that although they support the local school and love to cheer on the teams, they like the flexibility of home-schooling.

59. If the bill is passed in Virginia, ____________.
A. children will have the right to be taught at home

C. home-schoolers will have to reach high academic standards

A. He doubted it. B. He was against it.
C. He was curious about it. D. He paid little attention to it
61. Sydney Bowman is most likely to_________.
A. give up team sports B. go to public high school
C. stop taking part in wrestling D. report her academic progress

Babies, soft, delicate things that they are, typically spend their waking hours surrounded by items of equal softness. When it comes to sleeping , though, to cover a baby in all that softness can be a dangerous choice. Putting infants(婴儿) to bed with blankets and pillows has been linked to sudden infant death syndrome(SIDS), one of the leading causes of infant deaths in the U.S. Even so, more than half of American babies still sleep with unsafe bedding, according to a report published in the journal Pediatrics.
“Parents have good intentions but may not understand that blankets, quilts, and pillows increase a baby’s risk of SIDS and accidental suffocation(窒息),” Carrie Shapiro-Mendoza, the study’s lead author, said in a statement. While overall rates of SIDS have decreased in recent years, from 66.3 deaths per 100,000 infants in 2000 to 52.7 in 2010, deaths from sleep suffocation have more than doubled over the same time period.
The American Academy of Pediatrics(APP) first recommended that infants sleep on their backs in 1992. In 1996, the AAP declared that sleeping areas should be “free of soft surfaces and gas-trapping objects.” Three years later, the Consumer Product Safety Commission issued a safety warning that babies should be placed to sleep on their backs on a firm, tight-fitting mattress(床垫) in a crib(婴儿床) that meets current safety standards and that pillows, quilts, comforters, sheepskins, and other pillow-like soft products should be removed from the crib.
According to the most current guidelines from the National Institutes of Health(NIH), the safest way for a baby to sleep is alone in a crib, on its back, on a firm mattress covered only by a fitted sheet. Often, though, the safest method isn’t the one that parents see.
“Parents get a lot of mixed messages about how to put their infants to sleep,” Shapiro-Mendoza told The New York Time. “A relative will give them a quilt or a furry blanket than they may feel obligated(有义务的) to use, or they look at magazine and see a baby sleeping with a pillow.”
“Media messages targeted toward mothers of infants or would-be mothers may also be related to the high popularity of using certain types of bedding,” the researchers wrote, “Seeing images such as these may strengthen beliefs that having these items in the infant sleep area is not only a favorable practice, but also the norm. ”
62. According to the passage, what do parents usually do?
A. Let babies sleep on their backs
B. Put babies to bed with pillows.
C. Let babies sleep alone in a crib.
D. Follow the current guidelines of the NIH.
63. What do researchers suggest parents do?
A. Parents should get used to the norm of infant sleep.
B. Parents should adopt favorable infant sleep practices.
C. Parents should share their experiences on infant sleep.
D. Parents should be cautious about what the media say about infant sleep.
64. The passage is meant to __________.
A. criticize careless parents.
B. justify traditional parenting methods.
C. discuss the safest way for infants to sleep.
D. analyze the causes of infant deaths in the U.S.

It has been years since the Chinese get plastic bags from supermarkets for free. China has banned free plastic
bags at shops and supermarkets, but people have to pay for them. The Chinese once used about 300 million of plastic shopping bags a day, which has caused environmentally pollution because plastic bags are not easy to break down. So the Chinese is encouraged to take their own bags for shopping. Then what kind of shopping bag is the best to carry? Some student in Chongqing have a extraordinary idea. They use old clothes to make cloth bags, and then to ask their parents and friends to use these cloth bags instead of plastic ones. They do so because they think it is our duty to help protecting the environment.

Dear Wang Ping,
I’m very glad to have received a letter you sent me two weeks before. I’ve been thinking about the question you ask me. In my opinion, you should come back after you finish your studies at abroad. For one reason, what you are studying is bad needed nowadays in China. It will be quite easy of you to find a good job. In fact, I know that a few big company in our city are hoping to hire people like you. For other reason, I think it will be much more convenient for you to look after your parents as we are getting old. Therefore, I think it’s a good idea for you to return. So what are you waiting?
Best wishes.
Yours,
Li Hua

This morning on my way to school I was deep moved by what I saw outside a bank. An old man was
counting his money in the front of the bank. Suddenly a young man came running and knocked him down. To make things bad, his money was flying in all direction. At once the people around rush to pick the money up, while the old man stood there, not know what to do. Surprisingly, everyone gave back the money they had just picked. The old man counted the money again and found that not a single bill was missed. To my great joy, there are now a lot of nice people in your life. It’s true what honesty is more important than money!

I just come back from Britain last week. I was luckily enough to be one of the student from different
countries to visit the UK from Feb. 16 to 28. We paid a visit to many places, like London, Oxford or the Lake District. I learned much about British culture and history in London, where was my favorite. I also liked Oxford, in which I saw much more old buildings. The Lake District was beautiful, but it was pity that it rained heavily
when they were there. The most excited thing for me in the Britain was that I made a lot of friends there.

I’m a student in Senior Grade Three, study in a key school. Our life is busy and fairly boring. We often have
to attend classes seven days a week with only one day is off each month. The extra class at weekends almost make us to break down. In addition to that, the examinations held once a month drive our mad. Hardly have we finish the last exam when the next one is just around the corner. But it is really difficult to keep good state of mind. I’m looking forward to June 7th next year, no matter which the result is.

In my hometown there used to a temple with a history of more than four hundred years. It lies in a valley with green hills around it. It was such beautiful and famous that many tourists came visit it every day. They took photo; they wrote down their names on the walls; they were brought food and drink and left rubbish everywhere. One day some tourists did a fire to cook food near the temple. All of sudden, a strong wind blew. The wooden temple caught fire. Soon the wholly temple was burned out and only a little walls remained. The beautiful temple disappeared.

When my father bought me a computer as a birthday gift for me in last year, I felt very excited. As we all
know, computers are getting more and more usefully now. Much information can be stored in them. We can also learn that has lately happened in the world on Internet. In the past, people had to do lots of work which was very dangerous. Now, but, computers can do it instead. When an exam is coming, I often did some exercises on my computer. Then it will correct it and tell me the right answers. In this way it is very convenient for me to prepare the exam than before. The computer has become my real friend.

Here are two types of cars may some day take place of today’s big cars. If all the people drive such cars in the
future, there will be fewer pollution in the air. There will also be more space for parking cars in the cities, but the streets will be less crowded. Three such cars can fit in the space now need by one car of the usually size. The little cars will cost much less to own and drive. Drive will be safer, too, though these little cars can go only 65 kilometers per hour. But it will not be of any use for long trips.

Dear Sir,
How are you? As a exchange student, I am writing to tell you I would prefer to move into a single room in the next term, as I find that inconvenient to share a room with others. My roommate often held parties at night, made much noise. Besides, his friends are always visiting him, that disturb me a lot. So I hope to draw your attentions to this problem. If you think in my position, I am sure he will agree that the only solution for me is get a room of my own, one not in the same building but as near to the school campus as possible. I would be gratefully if you could do me the favor.
Best wishes.
Yours sincerely,
Li Ming
